Because the holidays are hectic, I often bake several batches of these several weeks before Thanksgiving.  Good to go through New Year’s!

Remember, this is an easy sugar cookie recipe!  It comes together quick and without a fuss.

Stored in the freezer, they are a quick go-to when you are short on time.

After New Year’s, I bake this recipe again to get a jump on Valentine’s Day.

Uptown or Down Home –  Sugar Cookies Are There For You!

Sugar Cookies pair wonderfully with champagne at Valentine’s Day or New Year’s.   Go ahead and put on the dog.  Create sandwich cookies adding strawberry jam to buttercream or whipped cream cheese for a filling.  Brie with a smear of jam is wonderful too!

Keep this cookie recipe on your party idea board!  The simplicity of a sugar cookie elevates an assorted tray of holiday cookies. At once classic and simple, everyone loves these versatile treats.   You need strawberry jam sugar cookies at your cookie exchange!

For casual picnics, strawberry jam sugar cookies compliment pimento cheese and fresh fruit.  Perre Magness, a friend and author of “Pimento Cheese: The Cookbook” might be rolling her eyes right now, but sugar cookies and cheese cannot be a bad thing!  Giggles

Stirring Strawberry Moonshine Jam in Sugar Cookies

Call to Action-fresh strawberries with Friends Drift Inn Strawberry Moonshine Jam - recipe ingredient-order today

Friends Drift Inn Strawberry Moonshine Jam

Friends Drift Inn Strawberry Moonshine Jam is our most popular jam.

You will love it!  There is no added food colorings, no preservatives, and no high fructose corn syrup.  We use pure cane sugar, not beet sugar.

When you taste a bite, you get the flavors of strawberries.  It is like Kentucky spring all bottled up to savor – even in the dark months of winter.

But there’s more!

Roll the jam around a minute and then swallow.

Wait for it!  Besides strawberry jam goodness, the finish has just a hint of moonshine kick.  It is subtle, like a white pepper or ginger.  And yes, the moonshine is legal.  It is made on the other side of the mountain from us.

A Word About The Sugar Cookie Flavor

Our Strawberry Moonshine Jam imparts a very subtle flavor in sugar cookies until you add a cheese pairing.  Then WOWZA!  The strawberry flavor come shining through!

Think cream cheese, mascarpone, or a slice of brie cheese topped with Friends Drift Inn Strawberry Moonshine Jam.

Like a little black dress, sugar cookies can go anywhere in a moments notice.  Bake ahead and take them on your next adventure.  Don’t forget the cheese and jam!

History of Sugar Cookies

What season do you most think of sugar cookies?

I most associate sugar cookies with the holiday season, from Thanksgiving through Valentines Day.

The Strawberry Jam Sugar Cookie recipe is one we turn to again and again for cookie exchanges and holiday entertaining at Christmas.  It is a cookie recipe  we just take for granted.

Did you know that National Sugar Cookie Day actually falls on July 9?  A good reminder sugar cookies are perfect for summer picnics!

Mobile-Cuisine weighs in on the history of sugar cookies:

When word started spreading throughout Europe in the 17th century about these tasty desserts, and later when they were introduced to the Americas, some entertaining terms were employed to describe these small treats. After all, this child-sized indulgence deserves a few whimsical appellations like jumbles, jumbals, crybabies, plunkets and gemmels. Early cookie recipes that probably morphed into the modern sugar cookie were called gimblettes in France and cimbellines in Italy, too.

These nicknames for sugar cookies intrigue me.  Round here I reckon we will continue to call them sugar cookies – but I reserve the right to change my mind!  Giggles

Serving Tips for Strawberry Jam Sugar Cookies

Sugar cookies as a simple garnish for something grander, like a ice cream sundae or a delicate custard are always welcome!

Strawberry Jam Sugar Cookies stack well.  They are perfect to tie up in little packages for holiday cookie exchanges or for Christmas packets to be shipped to friends far and wide.

We love these as sandwich cookies.  I like cream cheese with strawberry moonshine jam whipped in because that is simple, quick, and satisfying.

Brie with a little strawberry jam is mighty tasty too!

If you like serving intricately decorated holiday cookies, elegantly simple sugar cookies make a lovely contrast to your decorated desserts.

Got champagne? A stack of strawberry moonshine jam sugar cookies alongside a fruit platter is a light and refreshing change from the heavy desserts often seen at the holidays.  Great way to start a New Year’s tradition!  We often serve strawberry jam swirled cheesecake alongside strawberry sugar cookies for a double strawberry dessert treat.

Tea time, tea parties and all things Alice and Wonderland are a favorite hobby of mine.  These sugar cookies are perfect for a ladies luncheon, paired with mint tea either hot or cold.  Add a mint leaf garnish and fresh strawberry for a lasting impression.

In the summer, I sometimes sit on the front porch with my computer, strawberry jam sugar cookies , and a glass of strawberry jam lemonade pondering life, jam, and recipes.

I don’t know it they make me smarter, but sugar cookies sure make me happier!  Giggles

Description

Sleek and elegant, pair these easy-to-make cookies with cheese and jam, fresh fruit, or milk and cookies.  Year-round classic that you can bake ahead and freeze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) organic Unsalted Butter at room temperature
  • 1 ½ cups Pure Cane Sugar
  • 1 large Egg, organic preferred
  • ¼ cup of Friends Drift Inn Strawberry Moonshine Jam
  • ¼ cup Buttermilk (helps texture and browning)
  • Sparkling Sugar for top (optional)

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350.  Line three baking trays with parchment paper and set aside.

In a medium bowl whisk together flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda.

Combine butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat with a large spoon until all is smooth.  (You could use a mixer)

Add egg and jam and mix thoroughly.

Gradually stir dry ingredients into the butter and sugar mix.

If you choose, you can chill  dough at this point.  (Spreads less if chilled)

Using a heaping teaspoon, drop cookie batter on lined cookie sheet. Try to get the same amount of batter in each cookie.   These spread a smidge, so expect to put a dozen on a sheet.   You will need three sheets.

Sprinkle tops with sugar is you wish.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, rotating sheets at the 10-minute mark.  Cookie edges will be slightly browned.

Remove cookies from trays and place on a cooling rack.  Cookies should be crisp on bottom.

Notes

To reduce spreading, you can mix sugar cookie dough and chill for an hour or overnight.  Frankly, they do not spread so much that it really bothers me.

These sugar cookies brown up nicely but keep an eye that you do not go beyond the point of no return!

For Valentine’s Day, an extra dollop of strawberry jam sets the mood.

If making ahead, let cookies thoroughly cool before placing them in freezer storage bags.

This recipe was formulated to compliment Friends Drift Inn Strawberry Moonshine Jam.  We cannot predict how other jams will perform.
