Kentucky Mama Cocktail Party for Mardi Gras or Parrotheads and Tiki Pirates

Dreaming of NOLA and Mardi Gras

I’ve never been to New Orleans. I had a chance to go when the UK Wildcats played there…that was before Katrina.

There’s a strong connection between Kentucky and The Crescent City. Growing up on the Ohio River, it’s not hard for me to imagine my ancestors moving corn and bourbon down the river to NOLA. Stories of the Battle of New Orleans where my forebears stacked cotton bales to rest their squirrel rifles upon fighting the “Bloody British” have been handed down for generations.

I’m not a big fan of crowds, especially rowdy ones like those in New Orleans this weekend for Mardi Gras celebrations. But, if I could perch myself on a private balcony in the French Quarter and sip a few Kentucky Mama Cocktails…..well I bet I could earn me some “really special” beads. I’m just saying…..

Kentucky Mama Cocktails, a little bit of the elite Elmer T. Lee bourbon elixir of Kentucky, a bit of coconut rum, orange juice, pineapple juice and grenadine…….it ain’t a drink for locavores…but dang it’s good!

Kentucky Mama Cocktail Recipe

Mardi Gras Recipe, Cocktail Recipe, Bourbon Cocktail Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces Elmer T. Lee Bourbon (Yes, it’s a little pricey…but hey it’s Mardi Gras!)
  • 1 ounce Cruzan Coconut Rum
  • 1 ounce freshly squeeze orange juice
  • 1 ounce fresh pineapple juice
  • ½ ounce grenadine

Method

Shake all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Pour into a tall glass, I like tulip glasses. If you are feeling really celebratory, garnish with a wedge of pineapple. I used an orange wheel with cherry.
