A Baby Boomer in Appalachia Super Bowl Party Season

Football season fades into basketball season along about now. It’s all the same to me.

From opening kickoff, to the last hurrah of basketball’s March Madness my dear husband is otherwise engaged.

In addition to running an insurance office, Charlie is a local television and radio sportscaster. In an average year he covers over one hundred games, both high school and college, plus hosts a coaching show.

There are miles and miles of travelling to bring games to homes all over eastern Kentucky.

You might think that the local radio, newspapers, and television media would be in a heated competition to “get the scoop.” And indeed, there is a competition….but it’s amicable.

Travelling with Charlie on road games is always an adventure. Our dinners are shared with Pikeville College’s Sports Information Director, Rick Bentley, the Sports Writers from the Appalachian News Express, and radio station broadcasters like Andrew Joyce pictured to the right enjoying my chicken salad ice cream cone.

An ongoing gag when there is a breaking story is “Quick….Alert the Media.”

There is a micro-second pause then in unison they respond… ”Oh wait, we ARE the Media.”

There’s a shared laugh, and we go back to chowing down on whatever local delicacy we have opted to try. (Usually BBQ!)

Switching High Heels

The shoe has been the other foot for a couple of weeks. The Appalachian News Express is now publishing Friends Drift Inn Recipes twice a month. Tuesday, I made a brief appearance on Day Break Radio Show promoting Super Bowl Snacks.
